Navigation of the Ljubljanica

For a long time, the Ljubljanica was the central commercial traffic artery that supplied the city. Merchants travelled down the calm river bringing spices, wine, cereals, fabrics, fur and construction materials to the city. The main city quay developed on the left bank of the river already in the 13^th century and was very active until the mid-19^th century.

Waterside workers and dockers would unload and load boats here every day between eight in the morning and four in the afternoon, as much as 20,000 tons a year when river navigation was at its height. After a hard day’s work, they retreated to the nearby inn Pri zlati ladjici for a pick-me-up of crab and fried chicken, which they called flying žganci (žganci being a kind of buckwheat or corn mush).
