Some journeys simply would not feel complete without the one who is always ready to follow.
For many of our guests, travelling with a dogdoes not mean travelling with a pet. It means travelling with a member of the family.
So, if you are looking for a dog-friendly hotel in Ljubljana, at Zlata Ladjica you will find something a little more personal than simply a hotel where dogs are allowed.
Here, they are part of the story.
Because we believe that every stay should be unique, authentic and shaped around the people – and sometimes paws – arriving through our door.
There could hardly be a more fitting place for a stay with your dog.
Among the fifteen individually designed rooms at Zlata Ladjica, one carries a particularly special name: Happiness on a Leash – Sreča na vrvici.
The room was inspired by the legendary Slovenian children’s film Sreča na vrvici, released in 1977, and the unforgettable friendship between a boy named Matic and his Newfoundland dog Jakob.
But there is another detail that makes this particular story so beautifully connected to our house.
One of the film’s most memorable scenes takes place just beneath the windows of Zlata Ladjica, beside Cobblers’ Bridge.
Decades later, four-legged travellers continue to arrive here with their humans and create completely new stories of their own.
We rather like that continuity.
At Zlata Ladjica, we have three rooms designated for guests travelling with dogs.
This allows our team to prepare everything properly before arrival and ensure that both our human and canine guests feel at home.
You can also explore all fifteen storytelling rooms before choosing the stay that becomes part of your Ljubljana story.
Sleeping mats and bowls for food and water can be prepared in the room, while additional amenities can be organised with advance notice.
Our pet policy generally welcomes well-mannered dogs over one year old and weighing up to 15 kg. If your dog is larger, tell us a little more about them and their previous travel experience – individual exceptions can be considered.
Because being dog-friendly, to us, means much more than placing a bowl beside the bed.
It begins with understanding who has arrived.
One of the loveliest things about staying in the heart of Ljubljana is that there is no need to plan every step.
The pedestrian Old Town begins directly outside our door, the Ljubljanica flows beneath our windows and the greener side of the city is never far away.
Ljubljana itself is wonderfully suited to travellers with dogs, with parks, pedestrian areas, outdoor terraces and plenty of opportunities to spend the day together. For additional city inspiration, you can also browse Zlata Ladjica Experiences.
But we deliberately will not give you a list of prescribed walks here.
Why?
Because your dog will find something waiting in the room.
For our four-legged guests and their humans, we have created our own Zlata Ladjica Ljubljana Dog Guide, with ideas for walks, green escapes and useful little addresses around the city.
And more importantly, our team is here to help you choose what suits your dog.
A young and energetic companion may happily explore Ljubljana for hours.
Another may consider a gentle riverside stroll, a good lunch and an afternoon nap to be the definition of a perfect city break.
We consider both perfectly valid travel styles.
After all, personalisation should not stop at two legs.
Travelling with a dog should not automatically mean deciding who stays behind when it is time for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Dogs are welcome in our restaurant too.
So while you enjoy your meal, your four-legged companion can remain part of the experience.
And because five-star hospitality should occasionally extend to the guest under the table as well, let us know in advance and we will be delighted to prepare a little Zlata Ladjica puppychino.
After all, even our four-legged guests deserve a little five-star attention.
There may, of course, be moments when your Ljubljana story and your dog‘s story need to take different paths for a few hours.
Perhaps you would like to visit a museum. Enjoy a spa experience. Have a long dinner. Or simply spend a few hours somewhere your dog cannot accompany you.
With advance arrangement, we can organise a pet nanny.
Rather than your dog simply waiting for you, their time can be adapted to their individual needs – whether that means company, a peaceful walk or something a little more energetic.
You enjoy your experience. They enjoy theirs.
And when you meet again, the two stories simply continue as one.
More than you might expect.
For example, dogs are welcome on Castle Hill. Dogs on a leash and wearing a muzzle may also travel on the funicular and enter the Ljubljana Castle Courtyard, although they are not permitted inside the Castle’s indoor and event spaces. Check Ljubljana Castle pet information
There is another Ljubljana experience that sometimes surprises our guests: well-behaved dogs are welcome at Ljubljana Zoo.
Dogs require their own ticket and must remain on a lead throughout the visit. Individual areas are restricted. Check Ljubljana Zoo
Many cafés and restaurants around Ljubljana are also happy to welcome dogs, particularly on outdoor terraces, although individual policies can differ. Read Visit Ljubljana’s dog-friendly guide
And if you have a particular place in mind?
Ask our team.
Instead of giving every guest the same list, we would much rather know what you would like to experience and help shape the day around you.
That is where the real story begins.
Because we have only three designated dog-friendly rooms, travelling with a dog needs to be arranged with us in advance.
Our current pet policy generally welcomes well-mannered dogs over one year old and weighing up to 15 kg, while larger dogs may be accepted individually following prior discussion.
Dogs should be accustomed to travelling, properly supervised and kept on a leash when appropriate.
They may not be left unattended in the room.
If you have plans where your dog cannot join you, this is precisely where our pet nanny service can help.
A pet fee and refundable security deposit apply to stays with dogs, and our team will confirm the current conditions with you when arranging your stay.
Most importantly, let us know if your dog has particular habits, needs or preferences.
The more we know, the more personal we can make the experience.
Perhaps your Ljubljana story will begin with an early morning beside the Ljubljanica, before the city properly wakes.
Perhaps there will be a castle, a long lunch or an unexpected new favourite corner of the city.
Perhaps there will be a puppychino.
Or perhaps the best moment will be the simplest one: returning to your room after a day spent exploring together.
At Zlata Ladjica, we do not believe that luxury means creating the same perfect stay for everyone.
It means understanding what your perfect stay looks like and creating it one detail at a time.
We are storytellers and storymakers.
One story at a time.
And some of the loveliest stories simply happen to leave paw prints behind.
